Students in PSU's School of Business Administration beat out seven other university teams to win the Northwest region of the American Advertising Federation's annual National Student Advertising Competition, held in Boise, Idaho, at the end of April. Advertising students wowed judges with a winning advertising campaign for Yahoo! for Teens. Four judges, including two from Yahoo! and two ad-industry professionals, scored the competition.
Yahoo! has a conservative internal corporate culture, but the PSU students felt very strongly that for Yahoo! to reach the teen audience, the company would have to take some risks. All four judges agreed. With their teen target audience in mind, the PSU student team came up with a comprehensive marketing campaign that included print advertising featuring Mr. Potato Head, television ads with Oompa-Loompas, cell phone karaoke, and an online alternate reality game.
