Students in Geography professor Barbara Brower's High Asia Calendar Capstone class have created a stunning calendar, "Journey to High Asia," in collaboration with its community partner, the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies. The full-color calendar, with over 40 images donated by professional photographers, is designed to inspire further understanding of the peoples and cultures of High Asia, and allowed PSU students to learn about this little-known region of the world.

The High Asia calendar includes images such as this one of these Tibetan-speaking Buddhist children from the southern part of the the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. |
Charged with managing every aspect of the project, the 20 students, representing almost as many fields of study, dispersed into small groups to focus on writing, research, production, design, and marketing in order to produce a calendar that combined photographs of people and places of High Asia with carefully researched stories explaining the cultural and geographical context for the pictures. A small but dedicated contingent of students continued working even after completion of the 10-week Capstone course to ensure that the calendar was ready in time for 2004. The Senior Capstone is the culminating course in PSU's undergraduate curriculum pairing teams of students with faculty and community partners to work on community-based topics or projects. U.S. News & World Report ranks Portland State's Capstone program as one of the nation's best.
