Students Complete Summer of Research

WHAT: Over 140 high-school students in Oregon and Southwest Washington participating in this summer's Saturday Academy's Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Program will present their eight weeks of summer research work through poster and oral presentations at the ASE Symposium (www.aseprogram.org).

Students conducted hands-on research for mentoring organizations that included Portland State University, Oregon Health & Science University, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Bonneville Power Administration and other professional, scientific and engineering organizations. Mentors provided students with a $1,000 stipend; local foundations and the Engineering & Technology Industry Council (ETIC) also provided funds. ASE is part of Saturday Academy, a pre-college program of PSU.

WHEN: Saturday, August 23, 2003

8:30 - 9 a.m.: Opening remarks by Jim Johnson, Pacific Power's Willamette-area engineer; Robert Dryden, PSU College of Engineering and Computer Science dean; Marvin Kaiser, PSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean; and Joyce Creswell, Saturday Academy executive director.

9 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.: Poster sessions and oral presentations.

LOCATION: PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom (1825 SW Broadway, third floor)

BACKGROUND: More than 2,200 students have participated in the ASE Program since 1990. Over 450 students applied for the 140 openings this summer; accepted students had an average high school GPA of 3.75 (out of a possible 4.0)..
