Portland State’s Graduate School of Education received the 2005 “Best Practice Award in Support of Diversity” from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in a ceremony last month. The national award recognizes the infusion of diversity throughout all components of a school, college, or department of education as critical to quality teacher education and professional development.

The School’s commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice has led to a doubling in tenure-line faculty from underrepresented groups since 1998. From 1999 to 2004, percentages of underrepresented students grew from 11 percent to 17 percent. Since 1998, 90 bilingual and bicultural students have graduated from the Bilingual Teacher Pathway Program and earned licenses to teach in one of 21 partner school districts.
