Saturday Academy Students Complete Summer of Research

What:
Over 140 high-school students in Oregon and Southwest Washington participating in this summer's Saturday Academy's Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Program will present their eight weeks of summer research work through poster and oral presentations at the ASE Symposium.

Students conducted hands-on research for mentoring organizations that included Portland State University, Oregon Health & Science University, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Bonneville Power Administration and other professional, scientific and engineering organizations. Mentors provided students with a $1,000 stipend; local foundations and the Engineering & Technology Industry Council (ETIC) also provided funds.

Saturday, August 21, 2004.
8:30 - 9 a.m.: Opening remarks by Darrell Gerrard, PacifiCorp's vice president of Transmission and Distribution Engineering and Asset Management; Marcia Fischer, PSU Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science assistant dean; Marvin Kaiser, PSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean; and Beth Katona, Saturday Academy development director.
9 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.: Poster sessions and oral presentations.

Where:
PSU Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom (1825 SW Broadway, third floor)

Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) is a part of Saturday Academy, a pre-college program of Portland State University. More than 2,300 students have participated in the ASE Program since 1990.
