What: Oregon Rep. David Wu, along with Margaret Beth Neal, director of the Institute on Aging at Portland State, Dr. Chad Cheriel from Oregon AARP’s Executive Council, and others will discuss the upcoming reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. Rep. Wu is working on legislation, developed in conjunction with the Institute on Aging, focused on elderly Americans who choose to live and retire in urban areas. He is also promoting a new direction in the Older Americans Act that reinforces a “wellness” model approach to providing services to aging Americans—an emphasis on healthy lifestyles, increased educational opportunities, and social services that enhance the capacity of older Americans to participate in the overall life of their community.

The Institute on Aging houses and sponsors the Senior Adult Learning Center, which exists to enhance the quality of life of older people through continuous learning, in part by allowing senior citizens to audit University classes for free.

When: Wednesday, February 22, 2006, 11 a.m.

Where: Portland State University Simon Benson House (1803 SW Park Avenue, Portland).

Background: Established in 1969, the Institute on Aging is located within the School of Community Health in Portland State’s College of Urban and Public Affairs. The Institute has three primary functions: to design, carry out, and facilitate research related to the issues, policies, and programs that affect the quality of life for elders and their families; to develop and implement training for persons interested in gerontology, geriatrics, and lifelong learning; and, to provide service to the community in the form of short-term training, educational programming, technical assistance and the sponsorship of organizations for elders.
