Portland State University is honoring Professor Doug Hall with the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award tomorrow, May 4, 2004, at the 15th annual PSU Salutes ceremony. PSU Salutes takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at PSU's Smith Union Ballroom, Smith Memorial Student Union, room 355 (1825 SW Broadway).

PSU Salutes is the University's annual event recognizing and honoring outstanding PSU alumni, faculty and friends for their dedication and continued support of both the University and the Portland community.

The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award will be given to Doug Hall in honor of his inspiring approach to education and his devotion to meeting the needs of students. Motivated by numerous conversations with would-be students, Hall launched PSU's evening degree program, now in its sixth year. He also worked in partnership with Portland Community College and Mount Hood Community College to develop a Compressed Work Week Engineering Program allowing people working compressed work-week schedules to pursue bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering. Both these initiatives have greatly expanded accessibility to workers in industry. In addition, Hall has played a major role in negotiating gifts from Tektronix and Intel to expand teaching laboratories.

"Doug is a tireless worker who is always willing to go the extra mile for his students, his colleagues and the world around him," said Michael A. Driscoll, PSU's vice provost for Academic Personnel and Budget and former executive dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. "His integrity, honesty and dedication to PSU are examples to us all."

Portland State University, Oregon's only urban university, is the largest and most diverse in the state system. The University's position in Oregon's economic and cultural center allows for deep community engagement and the creation of partnerships with hundreds of organizations throughout the region-partnerships that give PSU students valuable learning opportunities as they solve real-world problems of business and community. Portland State offers more than 100 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as graduate certificates and continuing education programs. PSU serves more students and confers more master's degrees annually than any other Oregon university.
