Portland State University is honoring Molly Gloss (B.A., ’66) with the Outstanding Alumna Award tomorrow, May 12, 2005, at the 16th annual PSU Salutes ceremony. PSU Salutes takes place from 5:30–7:30 p.m. in the Columbia Falls Ballroom at PSU’s University Place (310 SW Lincoln).

PSU Salutes is the University’s annual event recognizing and honoring outstanding PSU alumni, faculty and friends for their dedication and continued support of both the University and the Portland community.

The Outstanding Alumna Award will be given to Molly Gloss for her extraordinary service to Portland State University and her commitment to academic excellence. Gloss is the author of five novels of distinction, several essays, short stories and book reviews. Her novel The Jump-Off Creek was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Awards for American Fiction and a winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers’ Award and the H.L. Davis Oregon Book Award. She has also received the national Whiting Writers’ Award, one of the most distinguished awards given to writers in the United States. Gloss is an instructor at PSU and conducts workshops and seminars through PSU’s Center for Excellence in Writing. She also serves as the advisory board member for the Center and directs its curricular development.

“Molly Gloss is a fine example of the success PSU alumni are experiencing in their own fields and a shining example of how PSU Alumni give back to the Unversity,” said Chuck Johnson, development director at PSU’s Millar Library.

Portland State University, Oregon's only urban university, is the largest and most diverse in the state system. The University's position in Oregon's economic and cultural center allows for deep community engagement and the creation of partnerships with hundreds of organizations throughout the region—partnerships that give PSU students valuable learning opportunities as they solve real-world problems of business and community. Portland State offers more than 100 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as graduate certificates and continuing education programs. PSU serves more students and confers more master's degrees annually than any other Oregon university.
