Promoting International Awareness and Understanding, PSU Hosts Diversity Events with Focus on Islam

Portland State University presents three months of activities and events celebrating the diversity of the PSU campus with "Islam: The Campus Community Connection" which kicks off on Friday, March 12. Events are supported by a grant from NAFSA: Association of International Educators and are organized by PSU's Office of International Affairs, the Middle East Studies Center, the Muslim Education Trust and PSU's Muslim Student Association. All events are free and open to the public. For further information the public should call 503-725-4094.

Friday, March 12, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, Room 228
Presentation: "U.S. and Islamic Constitutionalism: A Comparative Overview." Featured speaker: Dr. Azizah Al-Hibri, professor of law, University of Richmond.

Thursday, April 1, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327
Presentation: "Islam and Modern Egypt." Featured speaker: Dr. Mohamed Mostafa, professor of political science at Cairo University and Visiting Scholar in Residence, Nazareth College of Rochester, NY.

Tuesday, April 6, 7 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327
Movie: "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet." A PBS production about Muhammad, portrayed as he is chronicled in historical records and as his followers interpret his life today.

Friday, April 9, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 298
Presentation: "Islam in a Changing World." Featured speaker: Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, director of the Islamic Society of Orange County, California, and professor of Islamic studies and world religions at California State University in Fullerton.

Presentation: "Islamic Art and Architecture in Egypt." Featured speaker: Dr. Irene Bierman, professor of art history at the University of California Los Angeles, director of the Gustav E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies, and chair of the Islamic Studies program.

Thursday, April 22, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327
Presentation: "Islam and Women's Rights." A panel discussion on the challenges facing Muslim women and the issues and trends surrounding women's rights in the Muslim world.

Friday, April 30, 6 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327-329
"Islam Culture Night." An evening of cultural interaction and education including the geography, language, clothing, music and cuisine from various parts of the Muslim world.

Tuesday, May 4, 7 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327
Movie: "Inside Mecca." A PBS and National Geographic production that documents the pilgrimages of five Muslims beginning with their preparations at home through to the climactic events of the hajj itself.

Thursday, May 6, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 338
Presentation: "The City of Mecca: An Urban Planner's Perspective." Speaker TBD. Take a tour of the architecture, town planning and historical development of the city of Mecca and its significance to Muslims around the world.

Tuesday, May 11, 7 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 298
Movie: "Born in the USA." This unique film challenges the misrepresentations of Muslims in America. It follows a Muslim American doctor and teacher in a post 9-11 world sharing startling and often funny insights into what it means to be a Muslim American.

Presentation: "Rethinking Identity: Muslim Americans." Featured speaker: Mona Goode, teacher of Islam and the Middle East at Marylhurst University and Clark Community College.

Monday, May 17, 7 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 298
Movie: "Muslims." The PBS frontline documentary examines resurgence through the stories of diverse Muslims struggling to define the role of Islam in their lives and societies.

Thursday, May 20, 7:30 - 9 p.m., SMSU, room 327
Presentation: "Islam and the West: The Making of an Image." Featured speaker: Mona J. Hammad Jahama, associate professor of history at the University of Jordan, Amman and Fulbright Visiting Scholar in Residence at Hollins University, Virginia.
