Associate Professor and Acquisitions Librarian, Mary Ellen Kenreich, will receive the 2006 Kenneth W. and Elsie W. Butler Award for Library Faculty Service in recognition of excellence of library service delivered to Portland State students, faculty and others at the Branford P. Millar Library and through the PSU Library web site.

Since Professor Kenreich joined the Portland State faculty in 1992, she has been a leader in the PSU Library. In addition to her position as Acquisitions Librarian, where she oversees the $3.4 million library materials budget and supervises five paraprofessionals, she has taken the added responsibility over the rest of the Library budget this year as the Library's Interim Budget Officer. She is a role model for professionalism, accountability, and integrity.

Mary Ellen Kenreich's scholarship has focused upon managing library acquisitions budgets and providing productive workplaces. Her service to the Library and the University has been extraordinary. Many times, Ms. Kenreich has been elected to serve as the Library's representative to the Faculty Senate, and she has served on numerous Faculty Senate committees. She has served on the Graduate Council and has chaired the Academic Appeals Board. The Library faculty have elected Mary Ellen to serve on the Library's promotion and tenure committees whenever she has been eligible, and she has served on numerous other Library committees. Her service in the Oregon Library Association has included chairing committees and serving on the Board as Secretary. On the national level, Mary Ellen was recruited from a national pool to serve on the Innovative Users Group of Functional Experts for Enhancement, an important group guiding the enhancement of the integrated online acquistions, catalog, and circulation systems on which PSU Library users depend. Professor Kenreich works behind the scenes with great dedication to ensure that accurate and relevant information is acquired cost effectively and made available expeditiously to Library users.

In addition to her master of library science degree from Kent State University, Ms. Kenreich earned her master of public administration degree from Portland State University. The Portland State Division of Public Administration awarded her the 1999-2000 Award of Excellence in Recognition of Outstanding Academic Achievement and Professional Development. Currently, she is Principal Oboist in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver, Washington.

The Butler Award for Library Faculty Service was established through an endowment by Professor Emeritus Kenneth W. Butler and his wife, Elsie W. Butler.
