President Daniel O. Bernstine won the 2005 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to international education at Portland State. He was selected by the National Association of State Universities and Land-grant Colleges' (NASULGC) Commission on International Programs.

The Commission lauded Bernstine for leading a successful internationalization initiative at PSU to raise awareness of the University abroad, increase international admission rates, incorporate international perspectives throughout the curriculum, and forge partnerships around the globe. Since 1999, PSU has experienced a nearly 50-percent increase in its international enrollment. More than 1,100 international students from 94 countries attend PSU, the second-largest number in Oregon.

Nancy Zimipher, chair of the NASULGC Commission on International Programs, said, "President Bernstine has spearheaded an Internationalization Initiative which involved not only the University, but also incorporated the international attributes and needs of the Portland metropolitan area, and the state of Oregon."

In recognition of this honor, the University of California at Berkeley named Bernstine, a 1969 grad, its "Alumnus of the Week" for May 23 through June 13, 2005.
