Portland State University's Saturday Academy program has elected four new members to its board of advisers to help guide and support the organization.
Saturday Academy is a self-funded, pre-college program of Portland State University that is jointly allied with Oregon Health & Science University and engages students in the Portland metropolitan area in hands-on, in-depth learning and problem solving by connecting them with community experts as instructors and mentors. Saturday Academy's innovative programs are open to all students in grades 1-12.
The new board members-Geoff Bunza of Vigilan Inc., Andrew Hay of Pop Art Inc., Stephen Pawlowski of Intel Corporation, and Mary Kay Tetreault of Portland State University have been elected to three-year terms beginning July 1, 2004. The Board of Advisors have also elected Dick Knight to chairman and John Frewing to secretary/treasurer.
New Saturday Academy Advisory Board Members
Geoff Bunza is vice president of Engineering & Operations for Vigilan Inc., a company that creates software for community-based care facilities. Bunza is an electronics and systems engineer with almost 30 years of design and design management experience, starting with computer design for Digital Equipment Corp, Automatic Test Systems design for GenRad, and Design Automation Systems for Mentor Graphics, Eagle Design Automation, Viewlogic Systems, and Synopsys. Bunza has co-taught electronics classes for Saturday Academy for several years.
Andrew Hay is the director of Software Development for Pop Art Inc. Hay has over ten years of industry experience and is a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer. Hay started his software programming career in assembly language for the IBM OS/360 mainframe computer at an energy company in Chicago and later became a project lead at The Information Management Group in Chicago, Ill. Hay earned a B.S. in Computer Science from North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
Stephen Pawlowski is the co-director of communications and interconnect technology within Intel Research and Development. He became an Intel Fellow, the corporation's highest recognized technical position, in 2000. Pawlowski received two Bachelor of Science degrees-in Electrical Engineering and in Computer Systems Engineering-from the Oregon Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Oregon Graduate Institute.
Mary Kay Tetreault, who has served as provost at Portland State University for five years, recently began a yearlong sabbatical to pursue publication of an upcoming book. Tetreault is a nationally known expert on the subject of equity in the classroom and author (with Frances Maher) of The Feminist Classroom. She studies race, gender and social status as they impact the classroom experience. Prior to coming to PSU, she was vice president of Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton. She was professor of secondary education, department chair and assistant dean at Lewis & Clark College for several years.
