This spring, Portland State University will offer its first online bachelor’s degree program, a B.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice through the Hatfield School of Government in the College of Urban and Public Affairs. The online degree is the first of its kind at Portland State.

The online program is designed for students who are interested in studying the causes, prevention and control of criminal activity; professionals who are interested in expanding their abilities to lead their profession; and people who live in remote areas away from college campuses or have lifestyles that would otherwise prevent them from attending traditional classes, including parents and shift workers. Students in the online program will acquire a broad base of knowledge about crime, criminals, victims and the criminal justice system, without ever having to step foot on campus.

“By offering this degree online with maximum flexibility, practitioners can incorporate working towards a superior education, expanded career options and a better professional life into their existing routines,” said Kris Henning, program director and assistant professor, Criminology and Criminal Justice. “Students will experience the same first-rate professors and curriculum online as they would in our classrooms. We ensure a high level of interaction between faculty and students and participants will be challenged like any student on the Portland State campus.”

The bachelor’s completion program is open to individuals who hold an A.A. or A.S., or 90 quarter credits (60 semester credits) of transferable college work. Students can complete the Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice program in as little as two years.
