Portland State University will honor four faculty and staff members for outstanding service to the University at spring commencement ceremonies this Saturday, June 11, at 3 p.m. in Portland’s Rose Garden Arena. Each will receive a $1,500 honorarium.

The Branford Price Millar Award will be awarded to Nancy Koroloff, professor of Social Work and director of the Regional Research Institute in the Graduate School of Social Work. In her 32 years of service to the University, Professor Koroloff has established an outstanding track record of scholarship and a national reputation in the field of family-centered mental health practice. A colleague wrote that Professor Koroloff “is a dedicated teacher who has remained active in teaching along with her administrative duties, a fine scholar who writes from her research, and a mentor to many generations of students and faculty.”

The Millar Award is given annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, instruction, University service and public service; and whose performance in the area of scholarship and research is judged to be exceptional—values recognized by the late Branford P. Millar, a distinguished president of the University.

The George C. Hoffmann Award for Faculty Excellence will be awarded to Dalton Miller-Jones, professor of Psychology and interim chair of Black Studies. Over the last 13 years Professor Miller-Jones has made extensive contributions to the University and the greater community and is known as a beloved and accessible educator. A colleague wrote that “he is a true leader; he not only helps design and implement new ideas and approaches to problems, he inspires others with his unique blend of personal commitment, enthusiasm, activism, and integrity.”

The Hoffmann Award is given annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished contributions to the University in the areas of instruction, university service, and scholarship which are done in the spirit of humanism, civility, and collegiality with particular dedication to students and loyalty to the University—values especially cherished by the late George C. Hoffmann, a distinguished dean and professor of history at Portland State University.

The Butler Library Faculty Annual Service Award for outstanding performance by a member of the PSU Library faculty will be awarded to Sarah Beasley, associate professor and Education/Social Sciences Librarian. Professor Beasley has served Portland State University for eight years and in that time has made significant contributions in reference and instructional services and in the development and management of information resources. Her contributions were instrumental in the development of the Branford P. Millar Library's second floor Research and Learning Center, where she and other librarians provide reference services to students, faculty and community members. Professor Beasley is active professionally at the local, regional and national levels.

The Butler Award is given annually to recognize excellence of library service to students, faculty and other patrons of the Branford P. Millar Library. The award was established through an endowment by Professor Emeritus Kenneth W. Butler and his wife, Elise W. Butler.

The Mary H. Cumpston Award for Service to Students is being awarded for the first time this year, to an academic professional or unranked university administrator who has demonstrated excellence in the area of service to students. This year’s recipient, Sandra Franz, has served PSU for 37 years, most recently as the associate director of the Center for Student Health and Counseling. Franz’s on-going contributions to student services and to the University have helped to promote quality health care and health education for students. Her colleagues describe her as professional, knowledgeable, dedicated, dependable, hard working and good at supporting students and staff.

The award honors Mary Cumpston, a beloved colleague and PSU alumna whose enduring contributions to Portland State University and to the community have enhanced the development and delivery of student services and improved the lives of our students. Her gift was the ability to identify individual and University needs and to match these needs with creative and effective solutions.
