The University has opened the doors to its newest, greenest building--Stephen E. Epler Hall, a new housing facility that combines environmentally friendly features and European-styled efficiency studio units. The six-story facility, named for PSU founder Dr. Stephen E. Epler, will house 155 students in 130 single and double units.

The project focused on creating a high quality living and learning environment for students, while incorporating many sustainable design strategies, such as natural lighting, a unique rainwater harvesting and storm-water management system, and extensive energy conservation measures. Epler Hall is on track to earn Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, and is indicative of both the University and the region's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Epler Hall replaces the old 13-unit Birmingham Housing building, 90 percent of which was reused or recycled. The top floor will host a "Global Village" themed residence life program pairing international and local students. Epler Hall is a first step toward meeting the growing demand for housing on the PSU campus from both local and international students; in fall 2004, the Broadway Housing facility will open with an additional 384 units.
