Following a national search, Lawrence Wallack, director of PSU's School of Community Health was named dean of PSU's College of Urban and Public Affairs. Wallack replaces Nohad A. Toulan, founding dean of the College which is today comprised of the School of Community Health, the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government, and the School of Urban Studies and Planning. It also includes eleven public service and research centers and institutes.
The College has been an integral part in shaping the region's innovative approaches to land-use planning, transportation, urban growth, community health, and government. Its programs in urban studies and public health are ranked among the top in the nation.
Wallack came to Portland State in 1999 from the University of California at Berkeley where he was on faculty for 17 years. In 2000, he was named one of the first recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Innovators Combating Substance Abuse awards, which recognize and reward individuals who have made substantial and innovative contributions to the field of substance abuse. Wallack has served on numerous boards and commissions, and is the principal author of two widely used books about media advocacy.
