Middle School Students Take "Microelectronics Imagination Tour" at PSU
WHAT: Nearly 150 students from Tubman Middle School will participate in a pilot program introducing them to the semiconductor industry at Portland State University this Monday. The program, Microelectronics Imagination Tours (MIT), was designed by the industry association SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) using a similar program for high school students, "Workforce Development Institutes."
Volunteers from local semiconductor and semiconductor equipment companies, along with students from Portland State, will lead programs teaching the basic math and science of making microchips - the "brains" powering virtually all electronic products. MIT lessons are designed to get more students excited about science and math and to encourage students to pursue continued interest in math and science classes.
WHEN: Monday, April 21, 2003, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
LOCATION: Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom, (1825 SW Broadway, room 355)
COST: The program is free to participating students.
CONTACT: Media interested in attending should contact David Santen, 503-725-8789.
BACKGROUND: Tubman Middle School was selected because of it involvement in Oregon MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), a program of PSU's College of Engineering and Computer Science that supports historically underrepresented students' pursuing careers in math, engineering and science. SEMI (www.semi.org), an international industry association based in San Jose, Calif., serves more than 2,500 companies participating in the semiconductor and flat-panel display equipment and materials markets.
