What:
Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber is leading a campaign to transform the American health care system, starting in Oregon. Dr. Kitzhaber will give a summary of his speech, “On the Road to Revolution: Fear and Loathing in the U.S. Health Care System.” He will then respond to questions developed by students from the College of Urban and Public Affairs and the Associated Students of Portland State University (ASPSU), co-sponsors of the event.

Background:
John A. Kitzhaber, M.D., earned his medical degree from the University of Oregon in 1973 and then practiced emergency medicine in Roseburg, Ore., for 13 years. Kitzhaber was president of the Oregon Senate from 1985–1993 and then governor of the state of Oregon from 1995–2003. His legislative career, which began in 1979, was marked by active leadership in the areas of public education, community development, environmental stewardship and a wide variety of health care issues including long-term care, resource allocation and uncompensated care. In January 2003 Dr. Kitzhaber began serving as president of the Estes Park Institute, which conducts six annual educational conferences for community hospitals. He also holds an endowed chair on Health Care Policy with The Foundation for Medical Excellence, an Oregon-based public, nonprofit educational foundation.
