A founder and leader of the Israeli feminist movement, Freedman served in the Knesset from 1973 to 1977 where she raised concerns of domestic violence, breast cancer, rape, incest, and teenage prostitution, issues that had rarely been publicly discussed. She introduced legislation that led to reform of Israel's abortion law. In 1977 she co-founded the Women's Party and helped pioneer a network of services for women, including Israel's first shelter for battered women in Haifa. Freedman later founded the Community School for Women, a school without walls that provides women's studies courses and learning for economic empowerment. An active member of the Israeli peace movement and a frequent lecturer on women's and peace issues, she is National President of Brit Tzedek v’Shalom. She has written a memoir, Exile in the Promised Land and numerous articles and reviews.

Marcia Freedman’s lecture The Road to Peace: The Role of the American Jewish Community will be Thursday, November 18, 7:30 pm at the Pollin Chapel, Temple Beth Israel, 1972 NW Flanders. She is scheduled for an interview on Thursday morning’s Radiozine at 9 am KBOO 90.7 FM. The two lectures are free and open to the public.
