[Text of letter sent to PSU students the week of November 8, 2004.]
This month Portland State University will issue randomly generated identification numbers to all applicants and students. These new ID numbers will become the primary student ID number. Note however, that PSU still requires knowledge of student social security numbers for certain transactions. The University is making this ID number change in order to minimize the risk of ID fraud, to protect student privacy, and to comply with state and federal regulations.
Your new ID number will be used on all PSU Admissions, Registration and Records' departmental correspondence and should be used when you contact us or access your records electronically. Until the University has completed this transaction, some departments may still require your social security number. Detailed information regarding the purpose and use of PSU ID numbers may be found at the following web site: www.pdx.eduhttp://www.pdx.edu/registration/student-records.
Your new PSU ID number is: xxx-xx-xxxx.
Your ID number has not changed if you were previously assigned or requested a non-social security number ID.
If you have any questions, please contact us at 503-725-3511 or visit us in the lobby of Neuberger Hall.
Very truly yours,
