Howard University's Orlando Taylor Headlines Diversity Day at PSU, June 1

What:
Orlando Taylor of Howard University will speak on "Improving the Climate for Diversity," at Portland State University's "Diversity Day," June 1, 2005. Diversity Day celebrations at PSU will also include the Diversity Initiative Awards Ceremony, which will recognize PSU faculty, staff and students for their support of diversity and the President's Diversity Initiative, and a poster-display session that showcases the many diversity related research projects being conducted by PSU faculty and students. The awards presentation will also recognize the winning essayists in the recent competition sponsored by Presidents Commission on the Status of Women. This event is organized by the Diversity Action Council and the President's Diversity Initiative at PSU.

When:
Wednesday, June 1, 2005, 3-6 p.m.; 3:30 p.m.-Speech by Orlando Taylor.

Where:
PSU's Smith Center, Room 355 (1825 S.W. Broadway).

The event is free and open to the public.

Background:
Orlando L. Taylor is vice provost for Research, dean of the Graduate School, and professor of Communications at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Taylor is recognized nationally for his work on diversity and inclusion issues, including preparing the next generation of college and university faculty members and enhancing access and equity in higher education. He currently leads the efforts of Howard University and 13 other leading research universities to make doctoral education more responsive to societal needs and student interests.
