Haystack Program Hosts Readings with Distinguished NW Writers and Choral Concert at Cannon Beach

Free readings and a choral concert are being offered in July and August as part of Portland State University’s 38th annual Haystack Summer Program in the Arts at Cannon Beach. A list of upcoming events is below.


Haystack brings celebrated writers, artists, musicians and poets to Cannon Beach every summer to teach weeklong and weekend workshops for Portland State’s Extended Studies Program.

READINGS will take place at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, 207 N. Spruce, 7 p.m.
Tuesday, July 18 - Sands Hall, Sandra Scofield
Wednesday, July 19 - Debra Gwartney,  Karen Karbo
Tuesday, July 25 - Stevan Allred, Joanna Rose
Wednesday, July 26 - Marvin Bell
Wednesday, August 2 - Judith Barrington

CONCERT will take place at Cannon Beach Elementary School, 268 Beaver St., 7 p.m.
Friday, August 4 – Choral Conducting Workshop singers, Rodney Eichenberger and students conducting.

The Haystack Program has been at Cannon Beach since 1969 offering workshops taught by celebrated local and national experts in their field. This year one class is also offered at Clatsop Community College in Astoria. The Haystack program is part of the PSU summer session and university credit is available for most of the classes. Tuition ranges from $175–$425 per workshop, with an additional charge for credit bearing classes. Lodging is not included in the tuition.
