Haystack Program Hosts Free Lectures, Readings and a Concert at Cannon Beach This Summer

A large variety of free events are being offered in July and August as part of Portland State University’s 36th annual Haystack Summer Program in the Arts at Cannon Beach.

Haystack brings celebrated writers, artists, musicians and poets to Cannon Beach every summer to teach weeklong and weekend workshops for Portland State’s Extended Studies Program. This year’s events include readings, concerts and lectures. A list of upcoming events is below.

READINGS will take place at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, 207 N. Spruce, 7 p.m.
Tuesday, July 19 – April Henry, Janice Kennedy
Wednesday, July 20 – Karen Karbo, Sandra Scofield
Monday, July 25 – Irene Wanner
Tuesday, July 26 – Dangerous Writers (Tom Spanbauer, Stevan Allred, Kate Gray, Joe Rogers, Joanna Rose)
Wednesday, July 27 – Marvin Bell
Tuesday, August 2 – Barbara Sjoholm
Wednesday, August 3 – Judith Barrington

LECTURES will take place at Cannon Beach Elementary School, 268 Beaver St., 7 p.m.
July 11-14, July 18-21 – Slide lectures or art films in the gym at each night. Presenters include Eleanor Erskine, Michelle Ross, Susan Harlan, Sarah Wolf-Newlands, Diane Welsh, Alexandra Opie, Ben Rosenberg, Una Kim, among others.

CONCERT will take place at Cannon Beach Elementary School, 268 Beaver St., 7 p.m.
Friday, August 5 –Choral Conducting Workshop singers, Rodney Eichenberger and students conducting.
