Graduate School of Social Work celebrates 40th anniversary
Posted: November 1, 2003

PSU's Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) celebrated 40 years of service to the community on November 7 with a day of anniversary events that explored "Care, Commitment, and Community in Turbulent Times." The event was marked by a poignant editorial which ran in The Oregonian the day prior:

"Among the important stories of how well a community's social safety net operates are those that rarely get told. Any day of the week, families, children or individuals may find that assistance coming from students and graduates of Portland State University's Graduate School of Social Work...a valuable community asset. Our community life is enriched by its success." The editorial pointed out that a third of the graduate students' time is spent in direct community service, and of the school's 3,000 graduates throughout its history, 90 percent remain in the region, providing services to its residents.

The Graduate School of Social Work also recently announced the Child Welfare Partnership's receipt of a five-year, $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to train child welfare workers in rural Oregon and Alaska. PSU was one of only seven organizations nationally to receive the grant.
