Glacier change focus of new Web site
Posted: January 1, 2004

Over the last few decades, the diminishing of glaciers has become a global concern. In an effort to raise awareness, Portland State geologist Andrew Fountain has set about to provide the public with accurate research and information on glacier change in the American West with the launch of a new Web site, www.glaciers.us.

Working with the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. National Park Service, Fountain and his team of PSU graduate students provide updated information and chronological pictures of glacier change in the West. The site includes information on glaciers rapidly shrinking due to climate change, and assesses glacier cover and how changes affect regional stream flow and global sea level. The Web site also includes a GIS (geographic information systems) database which allows users to track changes in several documented glaciers.
