Evolution of Math department reflects region's demands
Posted: July 22, 2003

A new doctoral program in Math and master's degree in Statistics reflect the Department of Mathematics and Statistics' shift toward enabling PSU to better collaborate with external partners, attract faculty and students, and increase grant opportunities. The new Ph.D. in Math is based on a reformed model unique in its emphasis on applied research and training as well as an interactive component that helps graduates to more effectively communicate their expertise with professionals in related fields, including engineers and biologists.

The newly approved program in Statistics fills a previously unmet need for statisticians in the Portland area by the multitude of professions that require large amounts of data analysis: healthcare, risk analysis and insurers, government, and other industries. The program will also support the department's Statistics Consulting Laboratory.
