Over 700 K-12 students from Oregon and Southwest Washington competed in the 2004 Engineering Design Competitions, which were sponsored by PSU's College of Engineering and Computer Science. This annual event is organized to promote interest in engineering and computer science. Below is a list of this year's categories and the student organizations at PSU that sponsored them.

  • Airplane Design Competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers
  • Catapult Competition sponsored by Tau Beta Pi
  • Edible Car Competition sponsored by Eta Kappa Nu
  • Egg Drop Competition sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers
  • Motor Design Competition sponsored by IEEE
  • Mouse Trap-Powered Car Competition sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
  • Truss Design Competition sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers

From all accounts, the students had a great time.

Below are some pictures of the students having fun during the competitions.

Mousetrap Powered Car Competition

Equal weight was given to each Time and Distance. Each contestant was ranked by performance, 1 being best, for both categories. These rankings were then added together for a final score, the lowest score placing 1st, the second lowest 2nd and the next lowest 3rd. There was a tie for second place in the High School division, for which a tie breaking decision was made. For the tie-breaker the ratio of best distance to best time was computed and compared. The results were as follows:
