The Pacific Northwest Children’s Book Conference for writers and illustrators, sponsored by PSU’s Haystack Summer Program in the Arts, will be held on the campus of Reed College July 11-15, 2005. Registration for the conference begins March 28, 2005.

Now in its sixth year, the Children’s Book Conference presents an exciting week of lectures, panels, small-group, faculty-led workshops and critique sessions. Special guest Jeannette Larson, a senior editor at Harcourt Children's Books in San Diego who edits books for preschoolers through teen-age readers, with an emphasis on picture books, will be giving several talks throughout the week.

“This conference differs from most in that we purposely limit the enrollment, which allows the participants to have meaningful interactions with each other and the faculty,” said Elizabeth Snyder, director of Haystack. “[Book conference director] Linda Zuckerman collected a stellar group of instructors who are all published authors and devoted to their craft. Morning lectures and afternoon workshops provide feedback and support for writers and illustrators, and students return year after year for the community and camaraderie.”

Conference participants will explore topics such as plot and character, fantasy, humor, and dialogue, receive specific information about how to become a professional in the field of children’s literature and focus on the craft of writing for children and young people. Individual manuscript and portfolio reviews may be scheduled with the instructors for an additional fee of $45; three university credits are available through Portland State University. This year’s distinguished faculty includes Margaret Bechard, Susan Fletcher, Marla Frazee, David Gifaldi, Eric Kimmel, Ann Whitford Paul, Susan Goldman Rubin, Elsa Warnick and Linda Zuckerman, director.

Housing and meals will be available to allow more opportunities for networking and ongoing discussion with faculty and fellow students. Tuition ranges from $590–$1,220 for the week depending upon residency and credit options.
