Architecture students build a dream for local family
Posted: January 1, 2004

Senior undergraduate students in a PSU architecture studio class earned real-world experience in designing a home for Habitat for Humanity. The students were challenged to design a 900-square-foot home for a small, 25-by-100 foot plot of land in northeast Portland.

The ten seniors who worked on the project were led by Garrett Martin, an adjunct faculty member who also works at local architecture company Firm 151. The students came up with seven designs and unveiled them at a critique session last winter. The best elements of each design were incorporated into a final design. Ground was broken for the house last spring with several of the architecture students participating in building the house alongside Habitat volunteers. The Oregonian featured the completed structure in its December 11, 2003, Homes and Gardens section.
