A mainstay of summers in Cannon Beach for over 35 years, Portland State University's Haystack Program in the Arts presents another all-star line-up of writers and visual artists for its annual creative arts workshops. Registration for Haystack begins tomorrow, March 15, 2005, and the program runs from July 11–August 5, 2005.
Haystack's weeklong and weekend workshops are taught by celebrated local and national experts in their field. The program is part of the PSU summer session and university credit is available for most of the classes. Tuition ranges from $175 to $415 per workshop, with an additional charge for credit bearing classes. Lodging is not included in the tuition.
"We have 15 writing workshops planned this summer in addition to the Haystack art institute and choral week," said Elizabeth Snyder, program director. "It is my hope that students will connect at the coast and continue their conversations through writing groups and friendships that last beyond the workshop. Being away from home and allowing yourself the time and opportunity to hone the tools of your art is truly a gift to yourself."

Writing Classes, July 11–August 5, 2005
This year's distinguished instructors include Judith Barrington, Marvin Bell, Ellen Bishop, Gary Ferguson, April Henry, Karen Karbo, Janice Kennedy, Laura Kalpakian, Katrina Roberts, Sandra Scofield, Barbara Sjoholm, Tom Spanbauer and Irene Wanner. Classes are in poetry, "dangerous" writing, travel writing, developing a character, memoirs, mysteries and thrillers, nonfiction and short fiction are planned. Each author schedules a reading on Tuesday or Wednesday nights at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce. These readings are open to the public.
Visual Arts Workshops, July 11–July 22, 2005
A new two week art institute has been created. The intensive "Haystack Art Institute" focuses on drawing and painting landscapes and portraits. The institute has a different emphasis each week and explores the latest techniques using drawing and painting media both in the studio and plein air. Students may sign up for one or both weeks. Evening lectures by visiting artists, slides, films, panels and discussions round out the program. Week one is called "Landscape Now" and week two is "Portrait as Metaphor." Susan Harlan, Sarah Wolf Newlands teach the program. In addition, Inga Dubay will be teaching a weeklong workshop "Drawing, Watercolor and Calligraphy" and there are two weekend offerings: "Nature Journaling with Watercolor and Pen," taught by Jude Siegel, and "Sand Painting: Sun, Wind, and the Tides," taught by Judy Lee Vogland."
Music Workshop, August 1–5, 2005
Rodney Eichenberger returns to teach the "Choral Conducting Workshop" where 85 voices will come together in a lively concert at the end of the week, August 5, 2005.
Pacific Northwest Children's Book Conference, July 11–15, 2005
The annual Pacific Northwest Children's Book Conference for writers and illustrators, now in its sixth year, will take place in Portland on the campus of Reed College (3203 SE Woodstock). Portland State University's Haystack Summer Program in the Arts, founded in 1969, has for 36 years provided creative opportunities for people who care about the arts.
