International Scholarship Opportunities

International Achievement Scholarship

Award amount: up to $4,500 per year

The International Achievement Scholarship is awarded to approximately 30 incoming international undergraduate students on the basis of their academic achievement. Students who maintain high academic standing may receive renewed funding for up to four years.

Eligible students typically have entering grade point averages (GPA) of at least 3.5 out of a possible 4.0 grading scale.

Students who have not yet met the TOEFL/English Language Proficiency requirement are eligible for this scholarship; however, activation of the scholarship will be delayed until after the ESL restriction has been lifted and the students are fully eligible for unrestricted enrollment in academic classes.

The International Achievement Scholarship is restricted to new admission applicants only.  Students already enrolled at Portland state are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Master's and doctoral applicants may be eligible for this scholarship depending on funding availability.

No Application Required

All admitted students automatically will be considered for the scholarship.  You are not required to submit a scholarship application form.

 

Thai Flood Relief Scholarship

Portland State University has established a scholarship fund to support new and continuing students impacted by the flooding in Thailand during the fall months of 2011.

The scholarship intent is to assist students whose Portland State educational goals have been adversely affected by the flooding. The remission scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Award Amount: $3,000 to $6,000 for one year (three academic terms), possibility to renew depends on available funding

Criteria:

  1. Admission to Portland State degree program (non-ESL); and
  2. Citizenship of Thailand, or Family Residence in Thailand; and
  3. Minimum enrollment of 12 credit hours per term for undergraduate or minimum 9 credit hours per term for graduate students; and
  4. Continued satisfactory academic standing; and
  5. Demonstration of financial need as a result of the 2011 flooding in Thailand.

Application Process:

New and continuing students must submit the application form.  The form is available online here.

Applications must include a personal statement of  circumstances (maximum 1,000 words) which demonstrates the extent to which the 2011 flooding has impacted their financial ability to enroll at Portland State or remain enrolled.  Specific examples are encouraged.

Japan Disaster Relief Scholarship

Award Amount: $4,500-$6,000 per year with option to renew annually on a case-by-case basis.

Portland State University has established a fee remission fund to support new and continuing Japanese students who, with their families, reside in the area of Japan impacted by the earthquakes and/or tsunami of April 2011.  The scholarship intent is to assist students whose Portland State educational goals have been adversely affected by the April 2011 earthquakes and tsunami in Japan.  The remission scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Criteria

  1. Admission to Portland State degree program (non-ESL); and
  2. Japanese citizen; and
  3. Minimum enrollment of 12 credit hours per term for undergraduates or minimum 9 credit hours per term for graduate students; and
  4. Continued satisfactory academic standing; and
  5. Demonstration of financial need as a result of the 2011 earthquake and/or tsunami in Japan.
